In the 1970s, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art held two artist soapbox derbies that have since become enshrined as high points in Bay Area art history — and in 2022, finally, they brought it back. Duct Tape and Dreams explores the rebirth of this only-in-San-Francisco event — from the legacy artists of the 1970s, to the modern day creators who are keeping the dream alive. In a city whose cultural pulse has seemingly been overrun by tech giants and realty booms, the Artist Soapbox Derby reminds us that the beating heart of the San Francisco art scene is as strong as it’s ever been.

In this conversation, BrandStorytelling Content Director Jordan Kelley sits down with the team at Stink Studios and SFMOMA to discuss what motivated the revival of the derby, the making of the film, and why it's important for museums to open themselves up to their communities, wherever that may be.
